Best Practices

Our nursing college has implemented LEAP- Learning, Exercise, and Active Participation as a best practice to foster holistic development among nursing students. This initiative blends academic excellence with physical well-being, recognizing that nursing professionals require both a sound mind and a healthy body to deliver effective patient care through outdoor learning sessions and weekly physical training activities. Students actively engage with nature and health-promoting practices.

LEAP nurtures discipline, teamwork, and experiential learning, shaping nursing students into competent, compassionate, and health-conscious professionals ready to serve society.

BEST PRACTICE: 1

Physical Activity:

The nursing profession demands physical stamina, mental alertness, and emotional balance. To ensure the holistic well-being of nursing students, the institution has implemented regular Physical Training (PT) sessions as a best practice. This initiative aims to build physical fitness, promote health awareness, and develop teamwork and discipline among students. Weekly physical activities help nursing students remain energetic, confident, and mentally refreshed, contributing positively to their academic and clinical performance.

Objectives:
  • To inculcate the importance of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle habits among nursing students.
  • To enhance stamina, strength, and endurance required for nursing duties.
  • To promote teamwork, discipline, and coordination through organized group activities.
  • To reduce academic stress and improve overall mental well-being.
  • To develop a positive attitude toward maintaining personal health and fitness.

Context:

The nursing profession often involves demanding clinical schedules and prolonged academic hours, leading to fatigue and physical strain. Recognizing this, the institution identified the need for structured physical exercise within the academic timetable. Weekly PT sessions provide a necessary balance between academic rigor and physical rejuvenation, ensuring that students not only excel academically but also maintain optimal health and energy levels essential for the nursing profession.

The practice:

Physical Training sessions are conducted once a week for all batches under the supervision of trained instructors and faculty coordinators. Activities include warm-up exercises, jogging, stretching, yoga, and sports-based routines. Students actively participate in these sessions held in the college grounds or sports complex, promoting outdoor engagement and teamwork. Regular attendance is maintained, and participation is encouraged as part of the institution’s emphasis on holistic education.

Evidence of Success:
  • Improved student attendance, concentration, and participation in academic and clinical activities.
  • Enhanced physical stamina and reduced health complaints related to fatigue.
  • Positive feedback from students regarding stress reduction and increased motivation.
  • Promotion of a culture of fitness and teamwork within the campus.
  • Notable improvement in students’ overall posture, alertness, and energy levels observed by faculty members.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:
  • Difficulty in scheduling PT sessions due to a tight academic and clinical timetable.
  • The only challenge faced is during the monsoon season, when outdoor activities are restricted due to weather conditions; however, sessions are managed using available indoor space within the sports complex.

BEST PRACTICE: 2

Outdoor learning:

The institution believes that learning should extend beyond classroom walls, encouraging students to connect theory with real-life experiences. To achieve this, the nursing college organizes Outdoor Learning Sessions once a week as part of its innovative teaching- learning strategy. This initiative provides an opportunity for students to learn in a natural environment, enhancing observation, reflection, and active participation. It helps nursing students develop a deeper understanding of concepts through experiential learning, fostering curiosity and engagement.

Objectives:
  • To promote experiential learning by conducting classes in natural and open environments.
  • To enhance student engagement and concentration through an interactive setting.
  • To encourage creativity, critical thinking, and observation skills among nursing students.
  • To break the monotony of routine classroom learning and refresh students mentally.
  • To strengthen student-teacher interaction in an informal and inspiring atmosphere.

Context:

Nursing education requires not only theoretical understanding but also the ability to relate knowledge to practical and community settings. Recognizing that confined classrooms may limit creativity and focus, the institution initiated outdoor classes to create a relaxed yet effective learning environment. Conducting sessions in open spaces surrounded by nature helps students think freely, observe deeply, and relate lessons to real-life healthcare situations. This approach also reduces academic stress and promotes a sense of well-being.

The practice:

Outdoor learning sessions are conducted once a week for all batches. The institution organizes these sessions in the college grounds under the trees during the morning hours, when the environment is calm, pleasant, and refreshing. Selected theory topics, reflective discussions, and group activities are carried out in this setting to make learning more engaging and meaningful. Faculty members plan the sessions in advance in alignment with the curriculum. The natural environment stimulates focus, creativity, and open communication, while fostering teamwork and enthusiasm among nursing students.

Evidence of Success:
  • Students report increased interest, participation, and attentiveness during outdoor sessions.
  • Faculty observations indicate better student-teacher communication and interaction.
  • Positive feedback highlighting reduced stress and improved motivation toward learning.
  • Creation of a lively and collaborative learning culture within the institution.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required.
  • Occasional challenges occur during monsoon season or extreme heat, which limit outdoor sessions.
  • Minor arrangements, such as mat or shaded areas, are required.
  • Proper coordination of time and space is necessary to ensure smooth conduct of weekly sessions.
